the photo galleries on the right will better explain, a picture paints a thousand words as they say. simply put, it is ordinary people shooting bows and arrows in beautiful woodland up and down the country, in woods we used to drive by wishing we could walk in. safety springs to mind for most people, but this is probably one of the safest sports about, as we obey very strict rules. so how do we go about it? well we walk a marked trail of numbered targets (36 is the norm) in groups of 3-5 people shooting at targets from marked pegs in turn. there is the all too frequent breaking of arrows on trees………accompanied by laughter, but when we have shot at the target, we go and collect the arrows then walk to the next target and so on. every week, we can and generally do attend what are called open shoots where we drive to another club’s wood and meet up with approx two hundred other like-minded souls. here we socialize, drink tea/coffee, have a bacon butty, collect our score cards for the princely sum of five to six pounds each and await the call to gather. from here we are instructed on arrangements and safety protocols before being being lead out to our pegs by the hi-viz course marshalls. once there we await the starting single air horn blast, firework, rifle or similar. this then begins the days event with stops for dinner and an end of day gathering back at the admin tent for score collection and placements for all classes of bows/sexes and ages. it’s as simple as that?…..no it isn’t! this is very addictive so be warned, your sundays will never be the same again. we are members of a society called the national field archery society (n.f.a.s.) and it has 6,500 members up and down the country. this society provides us with insurance (5m public + 5m employer liability), calendar of events, strict safety rules and guidelines, 3 annual national championship events and coaching courses. our club is also affiliated to the english field archery association (e.f.a.a.) which opens up the european championships, world championships and other international events to our members. this differs from the n.f.a.s. in that we shoot, for the most part, at spot targets from marked distances. whereas the nfas is unmarked distances and different types of target, intended to simulate hunting. hunting with a bow and arrow is illegal in the uk we can practice all days of the week outdoor at our 20 acre wood in belper where we have fixed distance practice butts ranging from 10-80 yards, fixed distance 14 target efaa course and an unmarked distance 18 target nfas course. we also gather on monday nights at the church hall in alvaston, derby between 7pm and 9pm. the hall is well equipped to practice in, 15 yard shooting line, good heating and lighting, kitchen, toilets and off-road car parking. the facility and artemis archers welcomes anyone to try their hand at archery. the entrance and hall is wheelchair friendly and the church hall now has disabled friendly toilets. come along and have a look to see if we meet your needs. as a responsible club we embrace all aspects of safety, which is why we have a child protection policy, which is a live document and will be constantly evaluated by our child protection officer. we have conducted a risk assessment for the hall usage. we have a strict indoor shooting rules document for all to adhere to and will be monitored at all times by our coaches and committee members. if you have any questions, please contact us using the details on the contact page. connect with us next n.f.a.s. shoot 28th october 2018 next e.f.f.a shoot 1st july – field round shoot bookings nfas shoot booking login status you are not logged in. username password hover or click the text box below forgot?
